Description

A spectacular and monumental carved greystone (schist) head of the Buddha with detailed hair and browband with seated figure above the brow. The head displays many of the sacred markings associated with Buddha - the prominent hair, forehead marking and elongated earlobes. The half-closed eyes give the far-away, other-worldly look which was eventually to become one of the standard traits of the Buddha type. It is supplied with custom-made display stand. It makes a most impressive and beautiful display piece in unusually good condition. Ref. "The Buddhist Art of Gandhara", Sir John Marshall, Cambridge University Press, 1960
