Description

A very large impressive wooden statue of "Poi Shian" also known as "Tonwah", one of eight guardians who man the gates to the Afterworld. Tonwah chooses whether the applicant goes to hell or heaven depending upon how much gold he has, hence the remaining gold decoration on the surface of the statue. Carved from a single piece of wood, it's very rare to find a surviving example in this good condition. Antiques such as this one are no longer unable to be exported from China.
