Description
A handsome Tang well modeled horse, Sancai glazed in amber and green. During the Tang Dynasty, the Emperor's interest in equestrian sports and notion of horsemanship as an aristocratic privilege resulted in wonderful representations of horses. Great care was taken in the ornamentation and display. Mounted on a custom stand. It is missing mane and tail which were normally made of real horse hair and have not survived the years. It is possible to add them into the prepared areas. Ref. "Seeking Immortality, Chinese Tomb Sculpture from the Schloss Collection", Janet Baker, 1996. Thermoluminescent Certificate supplied guaranteeing age of this wonderful piece.
Pictured with a Foreigner groom. They can be sold separately but it would be a shame to split up this matched pair.
