Description
A wonderful Ancient Chinese large lidded vase in rare intact condition. The piece is a fine example of a Qingbai ware funerary jar, also sometimes known as Yingqing, meaning "shadow green." They were used to hold grain and other offerings inside tombs. Elongated body The beautiful glaze is the early inspiration for the wonderful Celadon works to follow. The distinctive color of the glaze is a result of using pine wood as fuel in the kiln, creating a reduced atmosphere. Not only is the condition rare, having a lid is even rarer. The lid graced by a stylized bird. The neck is encircled by a fierce impressive dragon, a bit lower surrounded by turtles and other sea creatures. The body is encircled by 13 applied robed figures.
