Description
A child depicted with his/her mother. These pieces were used to commemorate the dead in Roman times. Their normal (in fact, mandated) treatment was to leave the monument to the dead in the city but remove the bodies to interment in a countryside cemetery outside the sacred boundary of the city. Even cremation was outlawed within the city boundaries in an effort to keep disease at bay.
This piece shows signs of weathering and abrasion commensurate with its age. The back has been sliced off making it much easier to display, lighter and more attractive. From Asia Minor.
